Maldives

An amazing thing happened to me last week. Okay some would not say being on beautiful Island in the Maldives only to have your professional camera brake mid landscape shoot is not “amazing.” But I learned something.

Three years ago I was lucky enough to be on that same Island. Last time other photographers had SLR's, impressive waterproof cases, and tripods. But this time every one was a photographer- capturing the landscape with their phones then sharing the images instantly on their facebook, google+, twitter, wechat, or Weibo.

People want to “share,” their images instead of creating the highest quality image. That means more photos of everything but less quality. I remember people “buying” a camera for their big overseas trip. Special locations meant a special investment in new camera gear. But people are sacrificing quality for the ease of what I call "shoot and share."

I must admit I enjoyed the ease it took just having a camera phone in my pocket, ready to capture at a moments notice. No downloading, and importing files. I took more photos, but is more better? I trained on Film Medium format cameras. The quality.....Oh the quality...Those were the days. But only a select moments could be shared as you only took you camera out in the beautiful nature sometimes. So do we swap quality of a few images for the ability to capture all moments?

However I also saw couples in the most beautiful place in the world not talking to each other because they were to busy seeing what their friends thought about the landscape they had photographed and tagged #blessed. Remember to be present in nature.

So here are my images. I captured them with my Camera 360 app. I have used the filters Film Flex, Warm, and Loft. I will never take my professional camera gear on holiday again. Even if we visit the most beautiful places in the world..like the Maldives. It was just too easy and I did not have to lug around my camera gear. But I am still undecided if swapping quality for quantity is a good thing. Will there be a film backlash, or will camera phones one day rival the medium format cameras of the world. Either way I enjoy watching the camera evolve.  But remember,  just because your phone is always on you, don't forget to enjoy the moment. Xx

Hotel Palácio: James Bond gives it five stars.

I’ve had the pleasure of staying in castles in Lausanne Switzerland, Airbnbs with baths overlooking secluded bushland, and hotel rooms with gold leaf cigar cases. However, I must say, Hotel Palácio boasts the most remarkable provenance and history I’ve ever experienced.  To their credit, they share the story exceptionally well, earning the ‘cap social’ on their receipt, valued at 73,078,500.00 Euros, which represents the Corporate Capital associated with Hotel Palácio. It’s a requirement in Portugal for all companies/corporations to state their Corporate Capital on bills/invoices/receipts.  Hotel Palácio boasts two very famous guests: Duško Popov (the real life inspiration for the James Bond character) and Ian Fleming. However, this hotel didn’t just accommodate them during one of their casual vacations. It played a central role in the British intelligence operation Midas. Duško Popov intercepted German requests for intelligence, feeding them back prepared British disinformati...

Photography and Economics

Hi, Im Photographer Kate Branch. Photography is an art form that has captured the hearts of many. But behind the beautiful images, there is a world of economics at play. The photography industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, with thousands of professionals and hobbyists all trying to make a living or capture the perfect shot. Being a professional photographer is not just about having the right equipment and skills, it's also about running a business. Photographers must be able to market themselves, manage their finances, and charge their clients appropriately for their services. The cost of a photo shoot can vary widely depending on the type of photography and the experience of the photographer. A basic family portrait session can cost a few hundred dollars, while a high-end fashion shoot can cost tens of thousands of dollars. In addition to charging for services, photographers also make money through the sale of their prints and digital images. However, the rise of digital t...
